As the crisp autumn breeze gently rustles the leaves and paints the world in hues of gold and amber, there’s something undeniably magical about this time of year. Inspired by the beauty of autumn, I’m delighted to share with you a free counted cross stitch pattern that captures the essence of this enchanting season. I know it’s not autumn right now, but it was when I made this pattern and it was laying around in a folder and I couldn’t wait until the next autumn came around to share it. 🍂🍂
So… picture this: a circular scene depicting a majestic tree adorned with vibrant autumn leaves, standing tall next to a charming little house. This scene evokes feelings of warmth, comfort, and nostalgia—a perfect embodiment of the cosiness that autumn brings.
Did you know?…. As the year winds down and temperatures cool, trees put on a spectacular show by changing the colour of their leaves. But why does this happen?
Well, it all starts with a pigment called chlorophyll, which gives leaves their green colour and helps them make food in the summer. But as the days get shorter and cooler in autumn, trees stop producing as much chlorophyll. As a result, the green fades away, revealing other pigments that were always there but hidden by the chlorophyll.
These other pigments, like carotenoids, create the yellow and orange colours we see in leaves. Meanwhile, in some trees, a pigment called anthocyanin produces red and purple colours. Factors like sunlight, temperature, and the type of tree influence how vibrant the colours become.
So, when you see leaves turning yellow, orange, red, or even purple in the fall, it’s because of this natural process. It’s like nature’s way of putting on a colourful farewell before winter arrives. So, next time you’re out admiring the autumn leaves, remember the science behind their dazzling display! 🍂🍂
Anyway…
The pattern when finished measures 50 x 49 stitches, translating to approximately 9.1 x 8.9 cm on 14-count Aida fabric, or 7.9 x 7.8 cm on 16-count Aida. With just 13 colours and a total of 1944 stitches, it’s a manageable yet rewarding project for cross stitch enthusiasts of all levels.

But why autumn, you may ask? Well, let me tell you why it’s my favourite season. Autumn isn’t just about pumpkin spice lattes and cosy sweaters (though those are certainly highlights!). It’s a time of transition, where nature puts on its most spectacular show. The air is crisp, the sky is clear, and the earth is adorned with a breathtaking tapestry of colours. It’s a season of reflection and gratitude, as we gather with loved ones to celebrate the harvest and count our blessings.
Now, imagine bringing a piece of this autumnal magic into your home with this cross stitch pattern. Whether framed and hung on the wall or turned into a decorative pillow, it’s sure to add a touch of warmth and charm to any space. Stitch it as a reminder to embrace the beauty of change and find joy in life’s simple pleasures.
So, gather your supplies, set aside some time, and immerse yourself in the soothing rhythm of cross stitch. Let this pattern be your creative outlet and your own little piece of autumn paradise. Happy stitching!
